Remember the library… that big building filled with shelves and shelves of books? It used to be the place to go whenever you wanted to learn something new. But… These days, the library offers outdated materials that are generations past current. Not much there is current if you’re going for education. Perhaps a good piece of literature, but don’t educate yourself on Internet Marketing from the Library, because you’ll be missing primary information necessary to building your business online.
When Jeff Mulligan sent me this message via email a few hours ago, I was headed out the door to drop off library books. I decided to check out his information for myself. I found the same outdated materials he mentioned in his email sitting on a shelf just inside the door, labeled “Internet Marketing Information” as if it was newly updated.
The pages were yellow and curled, dated and old. Needless to say, I checked the publication and copyright dates — Oh my Ghostbusters! The dates were pre-2000. Did the Internet in its current format even exist pre 2000. Honestly, that would be like reading a book about repairing your NEW 2010 Volkswagen titled, “Beatles, Bugs and other Motorized Dune Buggies.” (Don’t do it!)
Pre-2000, just to give you a tip of how far past these books were written, Google, eBay, Facebook, and YouTube were not much more than a spark of inspiration on somebody’s desktop computer. Websites were mostly under developed pages of color, text and spotted photo-graphics. Marketing online meant promoting your website off the net to drive traffic to the net.
